Need to know

  • Remember you can have free access to digital TV through Freeview. A Freeview box will cost around £20 but many new televisions now come with built-in Freeview. However, you are limited with the channels on offer (no Sky 1, Sky Sports, limited movies and kids channels)
  • If you do not want to cancel your service but wish to cut costs, you can downgrade your deal instead. For example, if you are a winter sports fan, try cancelling the Sports package during the summer (you just need to give a 30 day notice, so you’ll need to be organised)
  • Many of the best deals are saved for brand new customers so use the comparison sites to arm you with all of the up to date deals, call your current supplier and then haggle, haggle, haggle!
  • You can also call the FREE switching service 0800 781 4020 (or 020 3092 5045 from mobile) today to find the best deal for you. Lines open 8am to 9pm Monday to Sunday.
  • The cheapest way to get a smart (internet) TV is to buy a Now TV bundle for £14.99. You can download various apps including BBC iPlayer and Facebook and although you do need a Now TV account (see free trials) to set the box up, you don't need to continue your subscription in order to keep using the box

The inside track

  • Try and do an audit with the whole family to see which channels you watch the most and then this will help you find the package best suited to your needs
