Hair & Beauty

The average British woman spends over £2,338 on her looks each year - £338 at the hairdresser and £2,000 on cosmetics

But a little pampering and relaxation is great for stress management and boosts self-esteem

You can cut the cost of your beauty routine without having to sacrifice your favourite products. Check out our fab deals and freebies

Need to know

  • Try buying own brand versions of all your hair and beauty essentials. We bet you won’t notice the difference. It's often the same product in different packaging.  For your hair, try spending the money on the conditioner but buy basic shampoo
  • Shopping for yourself in the Baby Aisle can save you a fortune. Baby wipes are a gentler and cheaper version of make-up wipes, cotton buds are far cheaper than in the beauty aisle and instead of expensive face cream, the beauty experts swear by Waitrose bottom butter at just £3.20 for 100ml!
  • There are some things that you won't want to compromise on but do find the best place to buy your favourite products. Mysupermarket compares hair and beauty products at online supermarkets, Boots and Superdrug so you can find out quickly whether you should pick up your products with your weekly shop
  • Both Boots and Superdrug run loyalty schemes. They are free to join and well worth doing as you can earn points on your purchases to spend in store
  • The online discount cosmetic stores Gorgeous Shop, lookfantastic and feelunique are great for getting your favourite brands for less. They have slightly different prices for everything and are the cheapest for different brands- the quickest and easiest way to find which has your favourite brand cheapest is to type your product (eg. Maybelline lipstick) into price comparison site pricerunner

Everybody loves a freebie!

  • There are some sites where you can get free make up samples (among other things). This is generally through entering competitions or otherwise giving away your email address so be prepared to receive junk emails. Our favourite sites are magic freebies  and freebielist
  • Often if you visit a large department store you can have a free makeover.  Athough you will probably be expected to buy a product, you are likely to get free samples and tester pots too!
  • If you return 6 MAC makeup containers to a MAC counter you will get a free lipstick
  • And if you return 5 used (and washed) black Lush pots to a Lush shop you will get a free face mask- we LOVE recycling!

Student Treatments

  • Many salons offer haircuts, dyes and treatments for free if you become a hair model. Gumtree lists opportunities in its Freebies section or you can ask in your local hairdresser. Beware! Student cuts can take up a significant chunk of your day so you’ll need to factor this into your day!  Wella are usually always looking for models in London.
  • Your local Student Beauty Salon or Beauty College will do beauty treatments with a trainee at half the price or less. Be prepared to have a treatment in a semi private area and to give feedback
  • With student treatments it could be a great deal but remember they are learning so always use your best judgement. Try to get a recommendation and have treatments you can live with if they don’t go to plan - a bad manicure is annoying, bad hair dye is a disaster!
  • Ask around locally for deals and check out local community network sites or Facebook business pages

The inside track

  • DIY beauty treatments made from natural ingredients at home are fun to make, especially if you involve older kids. You can make a moisturising body scrub by blending a cup of brown sugar, a cup of olive oil, a cup of honey and heating for twenty seconds in the microwave - let it cool down before you apply! There are some other great recipes on the youbeauty site
  • Voucher sites such as Groupon, Wowcher and LivingSocial are a great way to get deals on luxuries like massages and spa products. But don’t browse, search specifically for what you want to prevent overspending
  • If you do sign up to a voucher site, create a folder in your email account for ‘Deals’ and direct their emails straight there, then only look when you want something
  • Buying own brand works for medicines as well, instead of buying Nurofen buy own brand Ibuprofen
