Hotel deals

We all need a treat! Be it a holiday or just a night away

Brits spend an average of £86 a night for rooms in the UK and £108 a night for rooms abroad

BUT You can save up to 75% by booking at the right time, comparing deals and grabbing last minute bargains!

Need to know

  • Booking 3 months in advance for hotel rooms is a good rule, hotels will start offering deals around this mark if they feel like they need the business
  • Look out for room sales from hotels like the Travelodge and Premier Inn
  • Booking mid-week, or on a Friday or Sunday rather than Saturday can get you BIG savings
  • Shop around before committing to a room, check out a comparison site (we’ve got one!) to find the best deals
  • Many countries, including the USA, charge room tax. Check and compare the final price after everything has been added to find out who really is the cheapest. Travel companies have been warned about misleading prices - so always check carefully!
  • When you find a room online check with the hotel directly to see if they can drop the price. Internet only offers do exist, but online Travel Agents often charge slightly more to cover the cost of their commission
  • Members only and 'secret' deals are often GREAT because the hotel can do great offers without everyone seeing (and getting) the cheapest price. See if you can get your company to sign up to HotelStayUK for 60% featured hotels
  • You can use your loyalty points to help reduce the cost of your stay. Clubcard points can be redeemed on various hotels including the Hilton whilst Nectar points can be spent with Expedia
  • 4 star hotels and 5 star hotels ARE ESSENTIALLY THE SAME! Stars relate to facilities rather than overall quality, often the only difference between a 4 and 5 star hotel will be that the 5 star has conference facilities

The inside track

  • If you’re booking for early in the year, try and book towards the end of the previous year before the hotel has time to review their year and potentially put up prices
  • If you’re booking a package holiday get one which is ATOL protected (protects your money if the company goes bust). For hotel booking sites pay by credit card if it’s over £100 to protect your purchase
  • If you can, staying slightly out of a city centre will drop your costs (but do look for good transport links and factor in travel costs).  Check tripadvisor or Lonely Planet to see if the city has a district where you’d like to eat/ try the nightlife and think about basing yourself there rather than central (Like Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin for the ‘alternative scene’ and cheap drinks…)
  • Check with your business or union to see if there are any deals available for certain hotels
  • To cut your costs further you could consider housesitting, homeswapping, hostels, camping or even couchsurfing check out our guide to Bargain Holidays for more info
